Restaurant Review: Athenian Burger

8511 La Palma Avenue
Buena Park, CA 90620
(714) 523-9999

The best breakfast burrito in the LA area. If you enjoy breakfast burritos you have to try this place. All you need to know is "I'd like a suicide breakfast burrito".

Rating: 9/10

They loose 1 point because they charge $1.50 for debit. I don't think they take credit cards.

Restaurant Review: Palsaik Samgyupsal Korean BBQ

Palsaik Samgyupsal Korean BBQ
863 S Western Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90005
(213) 365-1750

If you like Korean pork, this place is right up there with Honey Pig. The meat was delicious and the service was spot on. The only drawback was the $13 soju bottles which i think is overpriced.

For $40 you get 8 slices of the pork marinated in 7 different flavors.

spicy chili
garlic
herbs
wine
ginseng
curry
original
*forgot the last one

I've read some other reviews recalling an hour long wait, but we went on a Friday night and sat down within 15 minutes. Definitely worth a try - particularly if you are coming to LA for a visit.

Waiting patiently as i salivate for the meat the cook

On a completely off topic.. have you guys seen Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks play ball? I wrote about him back in Oct. 2010 when he was signed by the Warriors. He didn't get much playing time, then got sent to the Houston Rockets. Rockets waived him, so he was picked up by NY, only to be sent to the D-League for 2 weeks. None of the teams gave him a chance. Unfortunate luck came his way when injuries sprung NY - and the PG's couldn't perform. Mike D'antoni just ended up giving Lin a chance by playing him for 45 minutes - and Lin dominated.

Now they won like 4 games in a row. GG.

Restaurant Review: Veronese Cafe

Veronese Cafe
419 W Commonwealth Ave
Fullerton, CA 92831
(714) 578-8265

Hours:
Mon-Sat 9:30 am - 12 am
Sun 12:30 pm - 12 am

If you are looking for something different than Starbucks or a nice dating spot, you should try Veronese. The main difference is the atmosphere. There are little fountains, lots of plants/trees, and plenty of seats for large parties. The drinks are well made, and they serve food (which i have yet to try). It's pretty quiet and unique.

There are two short comings with this place though.

1. Parking sucks. There are about a total of 8 parking spots behind the shop. If they are all taken you will have to park on the street, but it's only a 1 minute walk.

2. Service. Don't expect great service. Personally i haven't had any bad experiences, but i've heard some bad reviews on Yelp. My theory is, since the place is Korean owned, they are nicer to FOB's that speak fluent Korean. Most Koreans like to get their drinks and just talk with company and not be bothered by waitresses every few minutes - and they are probably used to that custom.

If you end up going, ordering a drink and receiving it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you go up to the counter to pay instead of flagging someone to bring you the check.

Creating Korean Pancakes!

On a rainy day in Korea, you can ask just about anyone what they are craving to eat, and the answers will generally be the same.

"김치전, 양파전, etc."

It translates to Korean pancakes. There many different types of Korean pancakes, based on a single variable. Just like there are many different types of pizza based on toppings. There is seafood pancake, kimchi pancake, vegetable pancake, etc. Although my favorite is seafood pancake, the ingredients are not readily available. So i go to the next best thing, which is kimchi pancakes.

These pancakes go really well with soju, and it's a snack Koreans love to eat while drinking. Here is a quick and easy way to make some for yourself today!

What you'll need:

a. 1 cup of flour
b. 1/2 cup of water
c. 1/2 cup of kimchi
d. 1 egg
e. optional: frying mixture, and kimchi broth

First get the kimchi on a cutting board and dice it up. On a large mixing bowl, add the flour, kimchi broth (this is just the red juice in the kimchi container), water, egg, and the kimchi. The frying mix is optional because it's used for people who like their pancakes a little crunchy.

After you add everything, mix it together and you should get a nice thick layer of something like this:

Get a large frying pan and add a generous amount of cooking oil. You can make a large shape (as pictured below) or little shapes for individual sizes. Just make sure it's a thin layer.

After you took one, before you make another one - add more cooking oil. With the ingredients i listed above, you should be able to make 7 individual pancakes, or 2.5 large pancakes.

Enjoy! On a final note, you can be creative and add more ingredients like green onions or even beef.

King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls

Simply put.. the most delicious rolls you will ever eat. I bought a bag of 12.. and they were gone by the next morning. I have James to thank for introducing me to this delicious piece of bread.

They might end up being my downfall.. considering each roll is 90 calories. 12x90=.. you do the math.. haha.

Restaurant Review: Boiling Crab

www.theboilingcrab.com

If you like seafood this is a must go. I'm feeling a bit lazy so not sure how long i'll make this review, but Boiling Crab is pretty bomb. You can expect to pay about $25 per person. Also try the following:

1. King Crab
2. Cajun Fries
3. Shrimp

Use the *everything* sauce. It's a little salty, but really good.

Word of advice, don't go wearing nice clothes. You will most likely get sauce spots all over your shirt (even with the bib). Also expect to wait 30 to 45 minutes. 1 hour to 2 hours at peak hours.

Restaurant Review: Chronic Tacos

http://www.eatchronictacos.com/

Just when i thought i couldn't find a decent place with breakfast burritos.. I love breakfast burritos, and the really good ones are at Farmer Boy's. Unfortunately, the closest Farmer Boy's restaurant is in Fullerton.

Now, i found a second best.. or a close tie. Chronic Tacos is a new franchise restaurant that opened closed to my house. They serve their breakfast burrito all day and it's pretty bomb. Potatoes, cheese, salsa, eggs, bacon or chorizo for about $6.

They also have a pretty good selection of Burritos and Tacos. Their Spanish rice is especially good. I'd have to say that the taste is also more authentic than Chipotle.

Restaurant Review: M&M Donuts

M & M Donuts
4.0 star rating
617 reviews Rating Details

Categories: Donuts, Coffee & Tea
1614 W Katella Ave
Anaheim, CA 92802

Hours:
Mon-Fri 9 pm - 12:30 pm
Sat-Sun 9 pm - 11:30 am

People have been raving about this place as much as Pink's hotdogs in LA. As it comes with all good things (or popular things) the wait is very long. There were about 10 people in front of us, yet it took an hour just to take our order.

Some say the drive thru actually moves faster, which may be true. There are only 2 people working inside this small donut shop. Mom does the drive thru orders and Dad takes the window orders and makes the donuts. There are speculations as to why it takes so long just to take orders, but my guess is that by doing so and making people wait, it creates a small hype around the store and people get curious. So far, it's worked. It's just like clubs.. they purposely create this really long line outside and make people wait even though there aren't that many inside the club.

Those of you going for the first time here are some quick tips.

1. Blueberry donuts. Don't bother with anything else
2. Order 2-4 per person, as you will generally receive the donuts right away. If you order a dozen, expect to wait another hour.
3. Don't order a butt load.. even if you are hungry you won't be able to eat more than 4. It's like Krispy Kreme, you get sick of them fast.

So, are the blueberry donuts good? Yes. Probably the best blueberry donuts i've ever had. They taste like blueberry pancakes.

Is it worth the hour wait? Yes, but only once. Just so you can taste it. I probably wouldn't wait another hour sober. Maybe if i was buzzing and craving it.. maybe.

If you are smart, tell a friend about these awesome donuts until they are salivating. Tell them to go buy a dozen donuts and give them a few bucks. When they get back with the donuts. Profit.

Restaurant Review: Lazy Dog Cafe

http://www.lazydogcafe.com/

I went to the one located on Cerritos Mall. The atmosphere is basically BJ's. There isn't a big distinction other than their restrooms. The menu's look very similar, and their happy hour is about the same. However, even if their menus are alike, Lazy Dog Cafe (for me at least) has the better food.

The service was good, and everyone was very kind. In terms of price, you may want to stay away from their high ends plates. NY Steak was $25. If you go during happy hour, you get $2 off all appetizers and $5 mini pizza's. 16oz beer's are also $4.

It's a cool little place to hang out with friends, or even a night cap with your gf/bf.

Volcano Burger

Located off the 605 and Cerritos Ave. Open till 10pm. I tried their chili cheese fries.. and it was pretty good. 8.5/10

Apparently you need to try their chili cheese hotdogs with pastrami. Also their corndogs are good. Very nice restaurant. Don't go during lunch hour cuz it's packed.

I also need to go to Daikokuya ramen and Boiling Crab.

How To: Make a simple Kimchi fried rice!

Hungry? Here is a quick way to make sum Kimchi fried rice Bronx's style.

Ingredients:
1. Rice
2. Kimchi
3. Sesame Oil

Optional:
1. Beef, chicken or pork
2. Sesame Seed
3. Eggs
4. Salt

Cook the rice over night, and let it sit to cool. This will harden it a little and make it crunchier.

For the Kimchi, i prefer mine sliced and diced into tiny pieces because that way you can have some kimchi with every bite you take. So use a knife and cut up the kimchi until it's nicely shredded.

Mix the rice with the kimchi and add some sesame oil and seed. About 3-4 table spoons is enough depending on the amount of rice you are using.

From here, you can just use a frying pan, or a wok to stir cook everything with light olive oil. If you want to take it up a notch, you can cook some meat and eggs. Depending on the kimchi, you may need to sprinkle some salt while stir fying.

That's it! You are done. Takes about 10 minutes to make and it's pretty damn good!

Restaurant Review: Porto's

Porto's is a Cuban sandwich shop in Downey. They also have a large selection of bakery. Very modern atmosphere. They also have these things called potato balls, which has meat, potato, and a thin layer of fried batter. It's good.

The best chips in the world!

When i was a kid, i used to go to "House of Bagels" in the morning before school to eat their "All in One" Bagels with light cream cheese. The bagel was seasoned with literally everything (onions, garlic, salt, etc). The amazing thing was that it tasted delicious!

Trader Joe's made a smart move, and turned those bagels into baked chips. If you haven't tried them, i highly recommend them.

Food Review: Pat Bing Soo (팟빙수)

I have a confession to make.  I love Bing Soo, which is a Korean desert dish that includes Ice, Ice cream, sweet bean, fruits, and some type of sugar mixture.  You can get one at most Korean boba shops, particularly in Los Angeles @ Boba Loca for about $5.

Beginners make the mistake of not mixing the contents fully before eating.  Trust me, it's more delicious if you mix everything together to make it into a soup look-a-like.

In terms of healthiness.. if you ask to leave out the cup of ice cream and remove the boba, it's beans, fruit, and ice so it's not going to kill you.  Hopefully you don't live somewhere in Louisiana.. i doubt you can find this delicacy there.

Food Review: Tacos El Gordo

Located in San Diego, probably one of the best Tacos you will ever eat.  The spicy pork taco, and carne asada is the best, and each taco costs $1.89 + tax.  You will need at least 3-5 tacos to fill up because they are small, so expect to spend at least $10 with a drink.

Food Review: Laventina's Pizza

Laventina's Pizza
5806 Bellflower Blvd
Lakewood, CA 90713-1058

(562) 804-6490
laventinaspizzas.com‎

Just got a large cheese pizza here.. and it's really good.  Probably goes on my top 5 best pizza's I've had.  Seemed like a mom and pop shop.  The lady owner made the pizza herself.  The cheese was very tasty and the tomato sauce seemed homemade.  There was a good mix between the cheese and tomato sauce which was the best part of the pizza. Generally Domino's and Papa John's aren't consistent when it comes to balance between the two.  When you have too much cheese, it gets too greasy - and too much tomato sauce makes it taste like pasta.

Next, the bread was really good.  It was cooked perfectly, making it soft and easy to chew.  Lastly it was one of the least greasy pizza's i've ever had.  My fingers were spotless after eating the pizza.. not a single drop of grease.

I will be a returning customer.

[Food Review] Jim's Super Burgers

Jim's Super Burgers
9367 Telegraph Rd
Pico Rivera, CA 90660
(562) 949-1481
I was watching the Mentalist, and in one of the episodes they were discussing the best Chili in California.  That got me the cravings and i ended up searching on Yelp.  I didn't want just Chili.. i wanted Chili Cheese Fries.  I remember wen Carl's Jr. had them for a while back in early 2000.. they stopped making them though.

Anyways, the search ended when i came across the holy grail of all chili cheese fries.. the D.U.I.  Not sure what the history behind the name is, but it's chili cheese fries with carne asada and pastrami.  The large portion feeds 2 people and it costs $10.

How was it?  It was pretty good.  The carne asada was the best part of it.  It could have been better w/o the Pastrami.  Honestly, i probably won't crave it enough to go back.  It was probably hyped up too much by writers on Yelp.  From the looks of it, it probably tastes really good after a night of drinking (just like those bacon wrapped hot dogs outside of clubs in Hollywood).

To be fair, i did have a slight tummy ache so i didn't have much of an appetite.  If I ever do go back, i will be ordering the smaller size and w/o the pastrami.

Overall Rating: 7/10

The Best Fried Chicken Ever

Yesterday it rained cats and dogs, today it was a great day!  I think this is the first pic i posted with my gf.

Time for sum Sun and the Beach! Then it was chicken time and beer!
